Worlds Away Festival: Where Digital Art Meets Musical Innovation
How Augmento's AR layer transformed the Monterey County Fairgrounds into an interactive playground for over 10,000 'TRAVELERS'.
Digital Art Meets Augmented Reality
The creative backbone of the festival was nine exceptional digital artists, selected from a competitive international open call. Each artist designed AR moments that lived alongside the physical stages, sculptures you could walk through, environments that reacted to crowd movement, and visual stories triggered by location.
The lineup of contributing artists:
- Angelika Amiangelika
- Mariah Harada
- Zhiyan Cai
- Luana Doeur
- Jason Scuderi
- Stefan Mathez
- Aleksei Sebiakin
- Carmela Pereira
- Bruno Cassa
- Efren Mur
Their work shared the stage with world-class musicians including The Chainsmokers, Tiësto and Lauv, proving that AR and headline music acts can amplify each other rather than compete for attention.
Technology That Transformed the Festival Experience
The platform Augmento deployed across the grounds delivered four core capabilities that made the AR layer feel native to the event, not bolted on:
- Seamless integration of digital art with live performances, so AR moments respond to the music rather than running in isolation
- Crowd-reactive installations that responded to movement, density and energy in real time
- Location-anchored AR that planted experiences at specific points across the festival map
- Digital collectibles attendees could keep, extending the festival's emotional life long after the gates closed
A New Standard in Festival Technology
Working alongside Normal Studio and Vita Motus, our AR platform helped create the otherworldly atmosphere of "Nexus", the festival's narrative universe. Every TRAVELER felt the same world, but each had their own moments inside it. That balance of shared and personal is exactly where we believe live events are heading.
"Worlds Away represents everything we believe in at Augmento. We demonstrated that AR technology can create meaningful connections between art, music, and audience. Technology doesn't just support the experience, it fundamentally transforms it."
, Wes Pabis, CEO, Augmento
Why This Matters for the Future of Live Events
Festivals have always been about presence. AR, done well, doesn't pull people out of the moment, it deepens it. When digital art and music share a single physical space, audiences stay longer, share more, and feel more.
It's the same conviction we brought to our ArtSpaces installation in Zanzibar, and the same logic that's reshaping AR-driven brand experiences: technology should disappear so meaning can come forward.
Special Thanks
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to:
- The nine talented artists who brought their unique visions to life through our platform
- The Worlds Away team, particularly founder Ro Sahebi, for their trust and collaboration
- Our technical team, who made the AR layer feel invisible and inevitable
- Every TRAVELER who embraced this new form of festival experience
The first Worlds Away Festival is the start of a longer arc. If you're producing a festival, brand activation or cultural event and want to talk about where AR fits in, we'd love to hear from you.
